5 Delicious Marinades for the Perfect Chops


Sheep is a fantastic meat. It is healthy for you and is packed with vitamins. It gives you a lean and nutrient boosting protein that is also mouth-wateringly flavorful! To cook this meat to perfection takes a little practice, ingenuity, and a scrumptious marinade!

Sheep meat is a versatile meat and can fit into most cultures of cuisine depending on the marinade used. We have chosen five marinades to spotlight here. Each one gives the meat a different taste and vibe. For our meat lovers out there, these marinades are for you. For those of you who want to try something new, whip up one of these marinades for your taste exploration with the meat. Guaranteed, once you try it you will want to cook it again and again!


1. A Zesty Marinade

  • 2 Tablespoons Garlic- minced
  • ½ teaspoon Lemon Zest
  • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice (fresh is best!)
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • Oregano- 2 Tablespoons finely chopped fresh oregano, or you can use 2 teaspoons of dried oregano
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil

This recipe should make enough marinade for 8 chops

Directions: Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Rub each side your chops until well coated then refrigerate them for 1 hour in an airtight container or a ziplock bag. Take out of your refrigerator and grill or broil.


2. Spice-Up-You- Chops Marinade

  • 2 Large and crushed Garlic Cloves
  • 1 Tablespoon Thyme (Fresh is best!)
  • Cayenne Pepper to Taste
  • Coarse Sea Salt to Taste
  • 2 Tablespoons Extra-Virgin Olive Oil

This recipe makes enough marinade for 6 chops cut at about ¾ of an inch thick.

Directions: Combine your garlic, thyme, cayenne and salt in a food processor if you are using whole thyme leaves. If you are using crushed leaves then simply combine these ingredients in a mixing bowl. Next, add in your olive oil. Mix well.

Now to rub it on your chops. Make sure to get both sides of each chop. Place them side by side in a dish and then refrigerate them for 1 ½ hours. Take them from the refrigerator and allow them to get room temperature before you cook them. These are perfect for grilling or pan searing.


3. Classic Mint Marinade

  • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice (Fresh is best!)
  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 3 Cloves Garlic, minced
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ Cup Fresh Mint
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt

This will make enough marinade for 8 chops

Directions: Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl. Rub on each chop then place your chops in an airtight container and refrigerate. Let stay in your refrigerator for as little as 30 minutes or for up to 24 hours. Take out after your desired time and braai to perfection.


4. Simple Marinade for a Perfect Braai

  • ¼ Cup White Vinegar
  • 2 Teaspoons Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic- minced
  • 1 Thinly Sliced Onion
  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil

This is a perfect marinade for about 2 pounds of chops.

Directions: Mix together all ingredients until the salt is dissolved. Rub each chop on both sides until each is coated.

Place in a a ziplock bag or container and refrigerate for 2 hours. Take out and get on the grill, broil or pan sear them until they are cooked to your desired taste.


5. A Fresh and Tangy Marinade

  • ¼ Cup Finely Chopped Cilantro
  • 2 Tablespoons Onion – minced
  • 2 Tablespoons Lemon Juice (Fresh is best!)
  • ¾ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil
  • 2 Cloves of Garlic- minced
  • ½ teaspoon Coriander- ground
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper

This recipe makes enough marinade for 8 chops

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix. Coat your chops then place them in an airtight container or a large ziplock bag and refrigerate for 8 hours or overnight. Take out and cook as desired.
